Golf-Swimming great Phelps to play at Dunhill pro-am

LONDON, Sept 29 | Sat Sep 29, 2012 3:51pm BST

LONDON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - American swimmer Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian with 22 medals including 18 golds, will join Oscar Pistorius at next week's Dunhill Links pro-am golf event in Scotland.

Phelps retired after the London Olympics last month and has teamed up with 14-times major winner Tiger Woods's former coach Hank Haney for a golf reality TV show having taken up the game in 2008 following his eight-gold effort in China.

A statement from organisers said Pistorius, the first double amputee to feature in an Olympics when he raced in London, will also be present at the $5 million tournament that will have 10 major winners in the field. (Writing by Tom Pilcher, Edited by Mark Meadows)

Another item on the holiday hot list: Layaway

By TODAY staff

A new economic reality triggers the return of a payment plan of yesteryear. NBC's Chris Clackum reports.

Many people used to think of layaway as that relic of the past that your grandmother used during the Great Depression.

But the weak economy and? an increasing interest in keeping down credit card debt has pushed the holiday savings plan back into the spotlight.

Retailers including Kmart, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us are offering special deals and discounts aimed at getting people to start using layaway early.

Experts say layaway can be a good way to get customers into stores early, for shoppers it can be cheaper than using a credit card. But others note that those shoppers may be better off just saving money on their own, if they have a savings account, and holding out for late-season discounts.

Experts: Mayas prophesized, but not end of world

(AP) ? As the clock winds down to Dec. 21, experts on the Mayan calendar have been racing to convince people that the Mayas didn't predict an apocalypse for the end of this year.

Some experts are now saying the Mayas may indeed have made prophecies, just not about the end of the world.

Archaeologists, anthropologists and other experts met Friday in the southern Mexico city of Merida to discuss the implications of the Mayan Long Count calendar, which is made up of 394-year periods called baktuns.

Experts estimate the system starts counting at 3114 B.C., and will have run through 13 baktuns, or 5,125 years, around Dec. 21. Experts say 13 was a significant number for the Mayans, and the end of that cycle would be a milestone ? but not an end.

Fears that the calendar does point to the end have circulated in recent years. People in that camp believe the Maya may have been privy to impending astronomical disasters that would coincide with 2012, ranging from explosive storms on the surface of the sun that could knock out power grids to a galactic alignment that could trigger a reversal in Earth's magnetic field.

Mexican government archaeologist Alfredo Barrera said Friday that the Mayas did prophesize, but perhaps about more humdrum events like droughts or disease outbreaks.

"The Mayas did make prophecies, but not in a fatalistic sense, but rather about events that, in their cyclical conception of history, could be repeated in the future," said Barrera, of the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

Experts stressed that the ancient Mayas, whose "classic" culture of writing, astronomy and temple complexes flourished from A.D. 300 to 900, were extremely interested in future events, far beyond Dec. 21.

"There are many ancient Maya monuments that discuss events far into the future from now," wrote Geoffrey Braswell, an anthropologist at the University of California, San Diego. "The ancient Maya clearly believed things would happen far into the future from now."

"The king of Palenque, K'inich Hanaab Pakal, believed he would return to the Earth a couple of thousand years from now in the future," Braswell wrote in an email to The Associated Press. "Moreover, other monuments discuss events even before the creation in 3114 B.C."

Only a couple of references to the 2012 date equivalency have been found carved in stone at Mayan sites, and neither refers to an apocalypse, experts say.

Such apocalyptic visions have been common for more than 1,000 years in Western, Christian thinking, and are not native to Mayan thought.

"This is thinking that, in truth, has nothing to do with Mayan culture," said Alexander Voss, an anthropologist at the University Of Quintana Roo, a state on Mexico's Caribbean coast. "This thing about looking for end-times is not something that comes from Mayan culture."

Braswell compared the Mayan calendar, with its system of cycles within cycles, to the series of synchronized wheels contained in old, analogue car odometers.

"The Maya long count system is like a car odometer," Braswell wrote. "My first car (odometer) only had six wheels so it went up to 99,999.9 miles. That didn't mean the car would explode after reaching 100,000 miles."

A new, open-access article in the Journal of Integrated Pest Management provides information on the life cycle of tadpole shrimp, as well as scouting methods and management implications

Tadpole shrimp are pests of rice production systems in California and have recently been found impacting Missouri and Arkansas rice fields. The shrimp feed on rice seedlings and uproot them during foraging, and their foraging behavior causes water to become muddy, which reduces light penetration to submerged seedlings and delays the development of the rice plant.

In "Review of a New Pest of Rice, Tadpole Shrimp (Notostraca: Triopsidae), in the Midsouthern United States and a Winter Scouting Method of Rice Fields for Preplanting Detection," a new open-access article appearing in the Journal of Integrated Pest Management, the authors provide information on the life cycle of tadpole shrimp, describe a new method for scouting for tadpole shrimp in rice fields, and provide scouting results and management implications.

In the article, the authors discuss the tadpole shrimp's biology, life cycle, and distribution range, as well as options for controlling it. The authors also note that after the rice seedling stage, tadpole shrimp can be beneficial because they also eat weed seedlings and small insects.

In Sweden, man does time for convict friend

(AP) ? A man convicted of smuggling in Sweden outwitted his jailers by sneaking in a friend to serve most of his yearlong sentence, prison officials said Friday.

The identity of the false convict was discovered only when he'd been released on probation after serving about two-thirds of his friend's sentence "sometime in 2008 or 2009," Elisabeth Lager of Sweden's Prison and Probation Service said.

Lager said the in-lieu convict came to serve the sentence with a false ID ? a driving license in the name of the smuggler friend but with his photograph. She declined to name either man or give more details about the switch.

An international arrest warrant was issued for the real convict earlier this year, Lager said, but declined to comment on why it took police more than three years after the switch was discovered to issue the warrant. It was not clear if the smuggler's friend would be punished for misleading prison authorities and assuming a false identity.

The convict, who never served his term, was sentenced for a series of smuggling offences in southwestern Sweden in 2008. Several media reports said he had fled to Asia and had paid his friend for his "prison-sitting" service.

California man linked to anti-Islam film ordered held without bond

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California man linked to an anti-Islam film that has stoked violent protests across the Muslim world was ordered jailed without bond on Thursday by a federal judge over accusations that he violated terms of his probation on a bank fraud conviction.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, has been under investigation by probation officials looking into whether he violated the terms of his 2011 release from prison on a bank fraud conviction while making the film.

As a condition of his release, Nakoula, a Coptic Christian who most recently lived in the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos, was barred from accessing the Internet or using aliases without the permission of a probation officer, court records show.

"The court has a lack of trust in the defendant at this time," Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal said in making the ruling, citing a pattern of deception and the possibility Nakoula was a flight risk.

The crudely made 13-minute movie, billed as a trailer, was filmed in California and circulated online under several titles including "Innocence of Muslims." It portrays the Prophet Mohammad as a fool and a sexual deviant.

On September 11 and in the ensuing days, the clip sparked a torrent of anti-American unrest across the Muslim world. The outbreak of violence coincided with an attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities in the Libyan city of Benghazi that killed four Americans, including the U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

Federal probation officers investigating whether Nakoula, who was brought into the court wearing street clothes with his hands in cuffs and shackled at his waist, violated the terms of his release while making the film.

Federal prosecutors have made eight allegations against Nakoula of violating the terms of his release, including lying to probation officers. Nakoula's defense attorney had asked a federal judge in Los Angeles that he be given bond of $10,000.

BOUNTY FROM PAKISTAN

Nakoula has stayed out of the public eye for much of the past two weeks, amid outrage in Muslim countries over the film. Last week, Pakistani Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour offered $100,000 to anyone who kills the maker of the video.

The Pakistani prime minister's office later distanced itself from the railways minister's statement.

Nakoula's attorney, Steve Seiden, said on Thursday he was "extremely concerned for (Nakoula's) safety," suggesting he might not be safe in federal prison in Los Angeles because of the presence of Muslim prisoners there.

Prosecutors countered that Nakoula would actually be safer in custody than on the outside.

Humongous, gassy halo found surrounding Milky Way

The findings were reported today by a research team using data from NASA?s Chandra X-ray Observatory.

Artist?s illustration of a hot gas halo enveloping the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds

Our galaxy ? and the nearby Large and Small Magellanic Clouds as well ? appears to be surrounded by an enormous halo of hot gas, several hundred times hotter than the surface of the Sun and with an equivalent mass of up to 60 billion Suns, suggesting that other galaxies may be similarly encompassed and providing a possible clue to the mystery of the galaxy?s missing baryons ? a.k.a.,?dark matter.

The findings were?reported?today by a research team using data from NASA?s?Chandra X-ray Observatory.
?
In the artist?s rendering above our Milky Way galaxy is seen at the center of a cloud of hot gas. This cloud has been detected in measurements made with Chandra as well as with the European Space Agency?s?XMM-Newton space observatory?and Japan?s?Suzaku?satellite. The illustration shows it to be nearly 300,000 light-years across ? and it may actually be even bigger than that.

While observing bright x-ray sources hundreds of millions of light-years distant, the researchers found that oxygen ions in the immediate vicinity of our galaxy were ?selectively absorbing? some of the x-rays. They were then able to measure the temperature of the halo of gas responsible for the absorption.

The scientists determined the temperature of the halo is between 1 million and 2.5 million kelvins ? a few hundred times hotter than the surface of the Sun.

But even with an estimated mass anywhere between 10 billion and 60 billion Suns, the density of the halo at that scale is still so low that any similar structure around other galaxies would escape detection. Still, the presence of such a large halo of hot gas, if confirmed, could reveal where the missing baryonic matter in our galaxy has been hiding ? and possibly hint at the true nature of dark matter throughout the Universe.

Read: Dark Matter Filaments Bind Galaxies Together

Even though previous studies have indicated halos of warm gas existing around our galaxy as well as others, this new research shows a much hotter, much more massive halo than ever detected.

?Our work shows that, for reasonable values of parameters and with reasonable assumptions, the Chandra observations imply a huge reservoir of hot gas around the Milky Way,? said study co-author Smita Mathur of Ohio State University in Columbus. ?It may extend for a few hundred thousand light-years around the Milky Way or it may extend farther into the surrounding local group of galaxies. Either way, its mass appears to be very large.?

NatureServe, National Park Service, and US Geological Survey partner on development of shared regional resource

The conservation nonprofit NatureServe today announced the release of Landscope Chesapeake (www.landscope.org/chesapeake), a tool developed with the National Park Service and U.S. Geological Survey to help partners focus land conservation efforts. By engaging dozens of state agencies and non-governmental organizations from across the watershed, the partners will extend and enrich the platform provided by LandScope America (http://www.landscope.org), creating a shared system by which practitioners and citizens can guide and measure progress toward collaborative land protection and public access goals across the entire Chesapeake Bay watershed.

The partners have launched a first release of LandScope Chesapeake, initially focused on maps, articles, and photos about conservation priorities and protected areas in the Bay watershed. The team will be working with lead partners in each of the six Bay states to expand and improve the spatial, editorial, and multimedia coverage in each jurisdiction.

"We need science-based tools to inform collaborative conservation," said Mary Klein, president and CEO of NatureServe, "but we also need ways to inspire citizens to reconnect with our shared natural and cultural heritage. LandScope Chesapeake provides an important, model for convening public and private stakeholders from across the Bay watershed around a shared mission."

LandScope Chesapeake fulfills a goal identified by a broad group of public and private organizations for a publicly accessible, watershed-wide land conservation priority system. Developing the system to support collaboration and citizen engagement in conservation became a priority action for implementing the Chesapeake Bay Executive Order. Signed in 2009, Executive Order 13508 renewed the Federal government's commitment to restoring the health of the Chesapeake Bay and led to a formal strategy for achieving numerous conservation and restoration goals by 2025.

LandScope Chesapeake is the first major regionally focused mapping tool to extend the LandScope America platform. The map viewer at the heart of the project enables conservation practitioners and policy-makers from non-profits, land trusts, state and local agencies, and foundations to see quickly how and where different conservation values align and overlap, making it easier for them prioritize places with the highest conservation value and direct resources to those places.

LandScope Chesapeake will facilitate public-private partnerships within the watershed and monitor progress toward the 2025 goals. Enhancements planned for release in the coming months include:

  • More maps showing on the current state of land protection in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and relevant conservation priorities that represent the region's full range of natural, historical, cultural, and recreation values.
  • Targeted improvements to map-viewer tools that streamline and simplify reporting functionality across the states, including landscape summary reporting tools for government or corporate decision-makers, tools that help land trusts develop baseline documentation reports for conservation easements, tools that inform the process of choosing candidate areas for conservation, and tools to track the progress toward watershed-wide land protection and public access goals.

LandScope Chesapeake's first release debuted recently at a meeting of representatives of more than 30 public agencies and private organizations focused on collaborative large landscape conservation across the Bay watershed. "Participants were enthusiastic, viewing LandScope Chesapeake as serving a shared need for a tool that facilitates collaboration, helps organizations and agencies leverage each other's resources and engages more people in thinking about important places," said John Maounis, Superintendent of the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Office.

###

Initially developed by NatureServe and the National Geographic Society, LandScope America is a conservation guide that offers easy public access users to authoritative maps and compelling place-based narratives, photography, and data-rich maps.

LandScope Chesapeake leverages several million dollars of previous grants by Carl Knobloch, Jr.'s West Hill Foundation for Nature, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ExxonMobil, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Wild Resources Conservation Program, the Hershey Company, and the National Parks Conservation Association. In addition to its usefulness to practitioners and policy-makers, LandScope serves as an educational resource that improves landowners' and citizens' understanding of how local land protection contributes to broader conservation efforts.

Klitschko brothers remember Corrie Sanders in good words ? Boxing News

Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko are saddened to hear about the death of former world heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders. The South African fighter was shot twice by thugs during a birthday party at a local restaurant on Saturday night. He died of his injuries on Sunday morning.

?It was a shock to Vitali and Wladimir as well as myself when I heard the news,? said Tom Loeffler, the managing director of K2 Promotions, owned by the Klitschko brothers. ?Corrie was a world champion boxer and a true gentleman and a pleasure to work with outside the ring.?

A statement released by the promotions stated, ?We were shocked to learn of the sudden death of Corrie Sanders and we want to express our sincere condolences to his family. We will remember Corrie as a great person both inside and outside the ring. He was a great fighter with a big heart who always positively represented the sport of boxing.?

Sanders defeated Wladimir Klitschko in 2008 via second round knockout. It was this win over Wladimir that got him immediate recognition. However, later on, he could not defeat Vitali Klitschko and lost the WBC title to him.

News of Corrie Sanders? murder had spread like wildfire. Since he was a great fighter and surely a great for champion during his reign, he is being missed by the boxing fraternity deeply. Fans mourned for Sanders locally and internationally. They showed their support through social media updates and public statements.

As of now, police is investigating the crime scene and has promised to get hold of the criminals as soon as possible. Sanders was announced dead by police on Sunday morning. He suffered a shot at the back and one in his stomach area, while trying to save his daughter.

For now, the boxing fraternity has suffered a great loss. Sanders was a warrior at heart and probably the only one to beat Wladimir Klitschko this bad. His fights against Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko were among his best. He was known for his strength and his huge frame, probably the main reason why he defeated Wladimir.

Can Blogs Build Online Brand Presence

In a technological world of tweeting and status updates, social media networking has become the e-marketing buzzword, but what about the humble Blog? Can blogs be leveraged effectively to guarantee an increased online brand presence? Blogs,as a medium of communication that can have tremendous value to the small business owner and can be used as an effective marketing tool.

Effective Use of Blogs for Online Brand Presence

A blog is a web page on the internet that consists of short posts on different or specific subjects. The material is updated frequently and the information is more than likely to be presented in a chronological fashion. Since 1999, the weblog community has grown from a few thousand users to a worldwide community of over 100 million. Divided into two general categories, blog are either personal, much like a journal, or business related which is when they are a tool for corporate communications and to establish an online brand presence.

The Advantages of Having a Business Blog for Online Brand Presence

  • Business blogs can be used to connect with a much wider audience of potential customers. They are used to drive traffic towards a business website and are an excellent way for being able to share information with people on a global platform.
  • Business blog software is easy to use. It is a matter of a few simple clicks to be able to post the information that you have directly onto the blog web page. The three most popular blog software companies are Wordpress.com, Blogger.com and Typepad, all offering valuable software for the business blogger.
  • Blogging is cheap. In fact, it?s almost free. If you are a small business owner, you might not have the time to learn how to write the programs needed to keep a website up and running, and sometimes the cost of hiring a web designer and developer is out of reach. Blogging means that the business can have an important web presence for a few cents per day. It will get your business name out onto the World Wide Web and if you team it with some clever social media networking, you can have as much influence as any website.
  • Share your knowledge. Business blogs provide business owners with the opportunity to share their expert knowledge in their sphere of business. It is a way of adding value to the products and services that a business offers, and if you do have a web site and are able to set up cross-links then you will be increasing the traffic to the website, quickly and effectively.

A business blog can be one of the most powerful marketing and networking tools that your business can use. It will give you a valuable online brand presence and over time, the blog will develop a following of readers who will always be interested in the latest news and developments in the industry.

The best way to develop a loyal readership if to have regular updates. They do not have to be daily updates, but they should be posted at regular intervals so that people know when to check back for new information. If you are just starting out then you can even do a blog post once a week, just ensure that it is always on the same day, so people who come to expect it won?t be disappointed when they log in to your blog page. You can always up the frequency later as it gains momentum and you have an established online brand presence.

English Speaking Versus Writing, Which Is More Difficult - Nairaland

English Speaking Versus Writing, Which Is More Difficult? by FrontPageLawyer(m): 1:04pm On Sep 15For many, learning to write fluently in English is much more challenging than learning to speak fluently. written communications can come much more slowly in English than spoken communications.

on this forum, I have come to realize that mistakes are not permitted in English writing. It is a taboo even though typographical errors are allowed in some cases. So many members have fallen victim including me on "typographical errors". Yesterday I saw a member's comment on a particular thread ?picture of AY and wife in New York City?. He erred while commenting, I said to myself in laughter "this person has murdered English language and he will find no sleep" before I could refresh page 2, the thread has already jumped to page 4 and insult keeps cascading, members capitalizing on the mistake made. Attention was immediately shifted from the main topic and the focus was on this erring member until the thread got to page 10. One good thing is that, you'll learn from your mistake immediately. Reasons why we are here, share ideas, learn, be informed and get educated.

But i said to myself that even in Britain where English language originated from, English is still being taught and students still fails, but on this forum Nairaland, nobody cares. You have to be very careful or don?t post at all.

I know a lot of people that speaks fluently but can?t write, because, written communication is more formal while spoken communication allows for more 'mistakes' also Less reflection goes into spoken English than written English

Which is more difficult, English speaking OR Writing?

Writing is far more difficult than speaking. Punctuation alone takes time to learn. When you're speaking, you don't add "comma" or "full-stop". But in your writing, you must show how well you can use punctuations.

Writing.
If you are not literate in English you cannot write in English no matter how you can speak the language by aping others.
Majority of Nigerians who speak English cannot write correct sentences in the language.

Mayweather, Pacquiao settling defamation case

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have agreed to settle a federal defamation case in Las Vegas, according to a lawyer involved in the case, a move that avoids trial and clears a key hurdle to a long-awaited bout between two top fighters who've traded verbal jabs for years but have never met in the ring.

Terms of the deal are confidential, Malcolm LaVergne, a lawyer representing Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s father in the case, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

LaVergne said the various parties to the case have signed documents to be filed under seal asking U.S. District Judge Larry R. Hicks to dismiss the case. He said others involved in the case were preparing a public statement.

"The matter has been resolved," LaVergne said. "Any alleged terms of the resolution would be strictly confidential. Floyd Mayweather Sr. is very happy that this lengthy case has finally come to a conclusion."

The judge last week ordered Floyd Mayweather Jr. to pay about $114,000 in legal fees and court costs for avoiding questioning under oath from Pacquiao's lawyers in the case.

Attorneys for Pacquiao earlier lost a bid to end the lawsuit with a more severe sanction ? a default judgment for Pacquiao.

LaVergne said Tuesday he had no information about whether the court settlement means Mayweather and Pacquiao will meet in the ring.

Mayweather's promoter, Leonard Ellerbe, and attorneys for the two fighters didn't immediately respond to messages from AP.

Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc., declined comment. His spokesman, Lee Samuels, said the company was not involved in the defamation case.

Pacquiao, 33, a member of Congress in the Philippines, filed the lawsuit in December 2009 in Las Vegas. He sought unspecified damages based on allegations that Mayweather defamed him by suggesting he used performance-enhancing substances. Pacquiao denied Mayweather's claim.

Pacquiao is 54-4 with two draws in 60 fights. He is due to fight Juan Manuel Marquez on Dec. 8 at the MGM Grand Garden arena in Las Vegas.

Mayweather, 35, who goes by the nickname "Money," was serving two months of a three-month sentence in a Las Vegas jail on a domestic battery conviction when he was named by Forbes magazine this summer as the highest-paid athlete in the world for 2011. He is undefeated in 43 fights and was guaranteed $32 million for a May 5 bout where he defeated Miguel Cotto.

From words to deeds: Why election matters

When you vote for Democrat Barack Obama or Republican Mitt Romney in November, you'll be voting for more than a president. You'll be casting a ballot for and against a checklist of policies that touch your life and shape the country you live in.

It can be hard to see, through the fog of negative ads, sound bite zingers and assorted other campaign nasties, that the election is a contest of actual ideas. But it is always so. A candidate's words connect to deeds in office.

Roll back to 2008. Obama was the presidential candidate who promised to get the country on a path to health insurance for all. He delivered. If you haven't noticed one way or another, you soon will.

And back to 2000. George W. Bush ran on a platform of big tax cuts. That's precisely what the country got. A decade later, taxes are lower than they otherwise would have been.

That's not to say you can count on Romney's checklist or Obama's to come into full being. You sure can't.

By nature and necessity, the presidency is in large part a creature of compromise and improvisation. The unforeseen happens (the terrorist attacks), or circumstances change (the December 2007-June 2009 recession), or things that the candidate sets out to do run into a buzz saw in Congress (way too many examples to mention). That's why promises are broken, priorities shift and intentions get swept away by the fistful.

Even so, you get what you vote for, probably about as often as not. And a lot of what you get, you will feel in a personal way, for better or worse, no matter how distant Washington seems from your world.

The wars called away people in your orbit, if not in your family. The spending that each candidate wants to do ? Romney vows military expansion, Obama would put more into education, for starters ? is bound to benefit many livelihoods in some fashion, at the risk of even deeper national debt. And read their fine print: Medicare won't be the same in the years ahead. Perhaps not Social Security, either. (There's that national debt, after all.)

Across the spectrum of issues, Obama and Romney have drawn contrasts and telegraphed divergent ways for the nation to go.

You can't believe everything you hear. But you can believe enough to know that Tuesday, Nov. 6, is a true day of decision.

In this series, Associated Press writers who cover subjects at stake in the election look at the positions of the candidates, the underlying issues ? and why it matters.

EDITOR'S NOTE _ An introduction to The Associated Press' "Why It Matters" series, which explores top issues confronting the nation in this presidential campaign season and their impact on Americans.
