Sea Water Could Cause Uranium Pollution From Nuclear Fuel Rods

New submitter Required Snark writes "UC Davis researchers have found a mechanism where the sodium in sea water can cause uranium nano-particles to be released from nuclear reactor fuel rods. Normally the uranium oxide compounds composing the rods are very resistant to leaching into water. This could have serious consequences for the Fukushima disaster, since sea water was used for emergency cooling."

Researchers turn your smartphone into a virtual projector

Pico projectors are an easy way to increase the screen real estate of your mobile phone, but what if you'd rather not carry one around in your pocket or bulk up your phone's slim profile with a slip on solution? Well, a team of intrepid researchers may have come up with an elegant solution to your problem that can work with any smartphone and external display: virtual projection. The system works by using a central server that constantly takes screenshots of the external display and compares them with the images from the phone's camera to track its location. It then replicates what's on the handset's screen, while allowing you to add multiple image windows and position and rotate them as you see fit. Additionally, multiple users can collaborate and virtually project pictures or videos onscreen at the same time. Intrigued? See it in action for yourself in the video after the break.

Another side of Ai Weiwei shown in Sundance film (omg!)

Director Alison Klayman talks to the media before the screening of the film "Ai Weiwei - Never Sorry" during the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah January 22, 2012. REUTERS/Jim Urquhart

PARK CITY, Utah (Reuters) - A new documentary film offers a glimpse into the life of Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei, conveying a creative, brave, yet humble man who has become more cautious following his 81-day government detention in 2011.

"Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry," which premiered at the Sundance film festival on Sunday, features interviews China's leading artists and activists and people who surround Ai in is life.

It includes footage that humanizes the man, showing suprising tears from his mother worried about his safety, the artist playing with his young son, and highlights from his projects such as a poor response to the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

Ai, who was named the world's most powerful artist by U.K-based ArtReview magazine in October since his release, appears in interviews only before his detention, but not after his release.

The 54-year-old bearded, burly Chinese artist wanted to attend the Sundance screening "but felt it was just going to invite too much trouble," the film's director Alison Klayman told the audience after a standing ovation in Park City, Utah, where the festival takes place.

Ai became a symbol for China's crackdown on artists and dissidents when his disappearance and secret detention after battling Chinese authorities sparked an international outcry.

Last November he paid a bond of 8.4 million yuan (then $1.3 million) on a tax evasion charge, which he denies, while his supporters continued to raise the full, combined bill of 15 million yuan (then $2.4 million.)

Klayman spent several years chronicling his rise to prominence and told the audience she believed the detention of the artist, which became a rallying point for China's free speech and other movements, had changed him.

"There was absolutely a change. I really think about it as: there was the time before the detention and there was the time after," she said. "The big thing is that he is constantly changing, he always has been, so I don't know where it is going to end up."

INSIGHT INTO AI

The film offers audiences some insight into Ai's childhood, family, formative time spent living for years in New York and his reasons for often criticizing China's government, which is expressed in many of his contemporary works.

"If you don't act, the danger becomes stronger," says Ai, who had a hand in designing the Bird's Nest stadium at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has had installations at some of the world's major museums including London's Tate Modern Gallery.

"Never Sorry" shows his efforts gathering and listing more than 5,000 names of students who died in the Sichuan earthquake,

pointing to shoddy school construction and claiming that he was punched in the head by police in Sichuan's capital Chengdu.

But it also offers glimpses of a loving father and stoic son rarely publicly separated from his art and activism.

"Every night I can't sleep," his mother, Gao Ying, says to him in the film before breaking down in tears because she is worried she will not see him again.

"We'll endure what we can," he answers calmly, before later calling himself "an eternal optimist."

Klayman, who doubted there would be a public screening of the film in China, told the audience it was clear that being a father had altered Ai's life, too, along with detention.

He seems more careful, she said, when talking about footage in the documentary showing that upon his release, Ai uncharacteristically speaks little to reporters.

"He does have to be a lot more cautious. If this was a year ago he would be here," said Klayman.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Thousands of abortion opponents have marched to the Supreme Court in chilly, soggy weather to mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the decision legalizing abortion.

The "March for Life" has been held every year since 1974, a year after the landmark Supreme Court ruling. It's consistently one of the largest protests of the year in Washington, although weather likely kept this year's numbers down a bit.

House Speaker John Boehner told thousands of people gathered on the muddy National Mall on Monday afternoon that he's one of 12 children. He says his anti-abortion views aren't political; they're part of his identity.

Participants carried signs reading "I Vote Pro-Life First," ''Defund Planned Parenthood" and "Face It ... Abortion Kills a Person."

Pets and Bake-Off Contests? | Petside

Pets and bake-off contests: Are you wondering what these two unrelated topics might have in common?

For folks who love animals and also are passionate about cooking tantalizing tasty dishes, let me enlighten you. Several of the finalists in the 45th Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest to be held in Orlando, Florida, March 25-27 are also devoted pet lovers, vying to win the top prize of one million dollars. Trust me; that ain?t no chicken feed.

Tens of thousands of recipe entries were submitted, with just 100 home cooks chosen to enter the final round. Just being selected to compete in what Teresa Smith of Santa Rosa, California refers to as ?The Olympics of the Food Cooking Competition World? is a great honor. These finalists will be busy as bees cooking up a storm purr-fecting their recipes before boarding planes to the Sunshine State.

My interviews with a few of the pet ?pawrent? contestants were totally delightful. After talking about what they have whipped up, I am eager to try the amazing recipes submitted by these animal devotees.

One animal-loving contestant, Cheryl Langlois of Jefferson, WI, is totally horse-crazy. Her proudest accomplishment is rescuing those horses who are neglected. While attending a fundraiser at Spirit Horse Rescue, a facility to which she donates her scrumptious pies, a badly abused and neglected horse named Molly caught her attention. Adopted by Cheryl and her family, Molly is now a fit and sassy Grand Champion, winning ribbons and trophies at shows in the Pony cart pulling division. She was overjoyed to be selected as a finalist in the Pillsbury contest and can hardly wait to get to the Orlando event and cook up her fabulous Marmalade-Glazed Asian Meatball Cups recipe.

Twelve years ago, Emmy Lou, aka 6K Cat (her veterinary hospital bill) was one lucky kitten to have found Teresa Smith and her husband while making their daily rounds feeding a feral cat colony. Just five and a half weeks old, this sweet little ball of fluff captured their hearts, and the rest is history. But this happy orange tabby has developed cataracts and is slowly going blind. If Teresa?s fabulous Bacon-Cheddar Whoopee Bites recipe captures first prize, part of her winnings will help pay for Emmy Lou?s eye surgery and donations to help animal rescue organizations.

The first thing the ?Dancing with Dogs? lady, Natalie Morales of Oakley, California, did upon learning she was a finalist in the Bake-Off was to boogie-on-down with her two delightful pooches. Owned by an English bulldog named Marley and Mak, an Akita/Shepherd mix, Natalie refers to them as ?canine vacuum cleaners? since they quickly devour any food accidently dropped on the floor. If this passionate dog lover?s mouth-watering Mini Carrot- Spiced Cup Cakes with Molasses Buttercream recipe grabs first prize, some serious home renovations and landscaping will definitely be a top priority for Natalie and her charming husband.

For the icing on their cakes, leave a good luck wish to these creative animal-loving cooks in a comment.

Betty White's 90th Birthday: 4 highlights (The Week)

New York ? The Hot in Cleveland star is feted by Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett, and even President Obama in an NBC special in honor of her decades-long career

America's Golden Girl rang in her 90th birthday with a splashy NBC special Monday night. Amy Poehler, Mary Tyler Moore, Hugh Jackman, and Tina Fey turned out to toast ? and roast ? White, recalling favorite memories from the star's seven decades in show business, praising her talent, and, more often than not, cracking wise about her old age. (Watch a clip below.) Here, four highlights from the big birthday bash:

1. President Obama, the stand-up comic
In a taped message to White, President Barack Obama delivered a cheeky birthday greeting: "I can't believe you're 90 years old. Will you please produce a copy of your long-form birth certificate?" Look,?says Margaret Eby at?Flavorwire. The "'birth certificate' gag is a little tired," but Obama's cameo "was charming, as was the closing shot of him putting a picture of White next to framed ones of Michelle and the kids."

2. The many, many old lady jokes
An entire red carpet's worth of celebrities dropped by to deliver glowing speeches in honor of White, says Sarah Anne Hughes at The Washington Post. But more often than not, they were there "for a night of jokes about age." Amy Poehler kicked things off by calling White a pioneer: "I call her a pioneer because 90 years ago she literally [traveled] to California on stage coach." Carol Burnett chimed in, "Like many of you, I first heard about Betty White from the wonderful stories told to me by my grandmother."

3. "Thank You for Being a Friend"
The special ended with a star-studded singalong, with those in attendance serenading White with a rendition of the Golden Girls theme song, "Thank You for Being a Friend." After a standing ovation, a clearly moved White "ended the night on a high note," says Hollywood Life. She said, "To be able to spend a lifetime in the business you love with the people you love ? and get away with it ? is marvelous!"

4. A preview of White's next gig
The special concluded with a preview of a new prank show produced by White, called Betty White's Off Their Rockers, which features senior citizens playing hidden camera tricks on youngsters. The "feel-good" series puts a fresh spin on the tired prank show genre, says The Huffington Post, because none of the victims in the clip actually got mad at the senior pranksters. Instead, the common response was "amusement, delight, or a shaking of the head with a smile." Actually, says Verne Gay at Newsday, this show looks?"worse than awful, painful, and sad." It was embarrassing, and "White's spectacular career shouldn't be reduced to this."

Digital bank robbers make off with $6.7 million (Yahoo! News)

A group of hackers stole millions from a South African bank before anyone noticed

South African bank Postbank was robbed of $6.7 million earlier this month. But the thieves didn't need masks and guns to pull off the job ? just computers.

To pull off the heist, the hackers created a?backdoor into one of the bank's computers. From that hacked computer, they were able to access the rest of the network and issue the commands to distribute the $6.7 million to different accounts owned by the thieves. Those accounts were promptly emptied via?ATM visits.

Since the crime didn't raise any red flags with its automated fraud-detection programs, bank employees failed to notice the money was missing until the bank re-opened after the New Year's holiday.

The police and the South African government are currently investigating the crime. Because of the level of knowledge of the bank's security system, it is believed that the hackers were either employees or acting with an employee's assistance.

AirTran must reinstate pilot who reported problems

(AP) ? The Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Tuesday ordered AirTran Airways to reinstate a former pilot who was fired after a sudden spike in the number of mechanical problems he reported.

The agency also is requiring the airline to pay more than $1 million to the pilot in back wages, plus interest and compensatory damages.

OSHA officials say an investigation found reasonable cause to believe the airline violated whistleblower protection laws when it terminated the pilot in 2007.

"Retaliating against a pilot for reporting mechanical malfunctions is not consistent with a company that values the safety of its workers and customers," said OSHA Assistant Secretary David Michaels.

AirTran spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger said the company would not comment on an ongoing regulatory investigation.

Orlando, Fla.-based AirTran is a subsidiary of Dallas-based Southwest Airlines Co. Southwest acquired the company in May 2011.

Myanmar snub-nosed monkey caught on camera

Andrew Purcell, online producer

snub-shot-2.jpg(Image: FFI/BANCA/PRCF)

First described scientifically from a dead specimen collected by a local hunter in 2010, the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus strykeri) has now been photographed living in the wild for the first time.

The discovery was made by a joint team from Fauna & Flora International, Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Association, and People Resources and Conservation Foundation.

The images were taken using camera traps, triggered by infra-red sensors, placed in the high, forested mountains of Burma's northerly Kachin state, bordering China.

"We were very surprised to get these pictures," said Saw Soe Aung, a field biologist who set the camera traps. "It was exciting to see that some of the females were carrying babies - a new generation of our rarest primate."

Despite this, hunting and habitat loss mean that the species is likely to be classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in the near future. The population of Myanmar snub-nosed monkeys is currently estimated to contain no more than 300 individuals.

As well as taking the world's first photographs of the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey, the camera traps set up by the team also captured images of other rare animals, including the red panda, takin, marbled cat and Malayan sun bear.

(AP Photo/Cole County Sheriff's Department, File)

(AP) ? A Missouri teenager who told authorities she wanted to know what it felt like to kill pleaded guilty Tuesday to murder, telling a judge that she strangled a 9-year-old neighbor with her hands, stabbed her in the chest and cut her throat with a knife.

Alyssa Bustamante pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Oct. 21, 2009, killing of Elizabeth Olten in St. Martins, a rural town just west of Jefferson City. The plea avoids a trial that had been scheduled to start later this month.

At Tuesday's hearing, Bustamante looked down, her long brown hair covering her eyes, as the judge read out the amended charges and asked her if she understood she was giving up her right to a trial. She replied, "yes."

Cole County Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce then asked Bustamante to describe what she did.

"I strangled her and stabbed her in the chest." Bustamante said in a clear voice, looking straight at the judge.

"Did you cut her throat too?" the judge asked.

"Yes," Bustamante responded.

Bustamante, who is to turn age 18 on Jan. 28, was 15 at the time of the slaying and lived just a few homes down the road from Elizabeth. She told the judge Tuesday that she knew what she was doing when she strangled Elizabeth with her hands and used a knife to attack her. Upon hearing that confession, Elizabeth's mother Patty Preiss ? who was sitting in the courtroom just a few feet away ? took a deep breath and dabbed her eyes with a tissue.

Preiss wore a purple shirt with her daughter's picture and the words "Justice for Elizabeth." She left the courthouse without talking to the media.

Prosecutor Mark Richardson declined to comment after Tuesday's hearing, noting the case is ongoing.

The judge set a Feb. 6 sentencing hearing. Bustamante would have faced life in prison without parole if convicted of first-degree murder. But by pleading guilty to a reduced murder charge, Bustamante could eventually being released. The punishment for second-degree murder ranges from 10-30 years in prison or life with the possibility of parole. The judge said the armed criminal action charge is punishable by three years up to life in prison.

Bustamante's attorney, Charlie Moreland, said in an interview that Bustamante decided to plead guilty because "she wanted to take responsibility for it."

"This is the result we would have asked the jury to agree to," Moreland said. But her punishment will now be decided by a judge instead of jurors. "It's a very difficult decision for whoever has to make the decision. What is the appropriate punishment for a 15-year-old girl with her history and her background and the situation as it was?"

Bustamante's grandmother, who had been her legal guardian, left the courthouse without commenting to reporters.

Juvenile justice officials testified at a November 2009 hearing that Bustamante had attempted to commit suicide at age 13 after receiving mental health treatment for depression and cutting herself. Witnesses at Bustamante's adult certification hearing described her as a bright girl who ranked roughly in the top third of her class at Jefferson City High School. She had not been in trouble at school or with the law before her arrest in Elizabeth's killing.

At that 2009 hearing, prosecutors said Bustamante had plotted Elizabeth's death, even digging two holes to be used as graves, then attending school for about a week while waiting for the right time to kill.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. David Rice testified that the teenager confessed to the slaying and led authorities to Elizabeth's body. Rice said Bustamante told him "she wanted to know what it felt like" to kill someone.

Hundreds of volunteers searched for two days for Elizabeth before her well-concealed body was found in the woods near her home.

The Communications Network ? New Tools, New Voices (VIDEO)

Guest Post: Susan Herr, PhilanthroMedia

When trustees of the ?Mary Black Foundation decided to tackle teen pregnancy in the communities of Spartanburg County, South Carolina, they did what they usually do: make grants.

From the period between 2009-2011, the foundation committed $200,000 in multi-year grants to efforts that ensure high quality teen pregnancy prevention programs are available to the youth of Spartanburg; train parents and trusted adults to have open conversations with their children about love, sex, and relationships; and increase access to condoms and contraceptives.

But staff also saw this program area as an ideal opportunity to deepen the impact of the foundation by integrating strategic communications into its work.

Communications was still relatively new at the foundation, as?Cate Ryba had only joined Mary Black as the first communications officer in 2009.

After exploring multiple options, the foundation?decided early in 2011 to create a social media campaign, anchored by web videos, featuring local community advocates talking about the topic.??The resulting campaign, ?Speak Out, Spartanburg,? included the usual suspects: a school board, pastor and corporate leader.

But based on a belief that messages directed to youth would be more effective if driven by youth, Ryba and the Foundation?s sole program officer, Curt McPhail, conducted a series of focus groups?with youth to hone the campaign?s focus. Afterward,?they recruited eight of the focus group members and charged them with the task of producing pregnancy prevention videos aimed at their peers.

The squad of students came to the foundation?s offices weekly from September and December 2011 to produce the resulting six videos.??Because they starred, participants were also motivated to tap their own networks to disseminate the videos throughout Spartanburg.

McPhail, thinks that having ?these extra tools in its toolbox? better positions the foundation to create deeper relationships in the relatively small community it serves.?As a result of this effort, Ryba also got the chance to hone video skills, which she intends to deploy more broadly to support the foundation?s work.

To learn more about the project, lessons both program and communications staff learned and to see samples of the teen-produced work, watch the accompanying videos.

Game Over. I can't think of any other mainstream mid-sized sedan that looks that good from just about every angle. ?

Overall I like it. It's such a departure from the current Fusion, but for the good. Glad there's no more huge in-your-face chrome grill. ?

Damn. Ford wins. This is like a giant middle finger to every competitor. Wow.

It looks very good though I was expecting something more dramatic. And I wish the headlamps where thinner and not as long but I understand that probably wouldn't be possible with regulations. The interior is nice but I wouldn't say it's the best in the segment. I almost wish it was more like the Focus, a bit more polarizing and dramatic. ?

Best looking mid-sizer for sure. Way beyond the new Malibu!

I'm eager for more info...and photos. Unsure about the gauge cluster, but the rest is just stunning. ?

I agree. Focus interior is too fussy and cluttered for my tastes... ?
