Dell outs new E series Latitude laptops, Optiplex AIO and desktops to entice the enterprise

Round Rock just rolled out some new consumer machines this week, so it comes as no surprise that it's doling out some fresh computing goodies to the enterprise as well. First up is the new Dell Latitude E series laptops that come with a variety of ports for your connecting pleasure: one eSATA/USB combo, two USB 3.0 ports, a serial connector, 3.5mm headphone jack, plus HDMI and Gigabit ethernet. All those sockets come embedded in a chassis made of magnesium alloy that's been powder-coated on the bottom, giving it a lightweight, yet sturdy look and feel. In keeping with the tough-but-light theme, the top of these Latitudes are sheathed in aluminum, and the hinges are made of steel. Additionally, though it's a new machine, it's backwards compatible with many previous-gen Latitude docks and batteries

Fitch Lifts Cameroon's Rating On Improved Domestic Debt ...

Fitch Ratings raised its ratings on the Republic of Cameroon one notch closer to investment grade, pointing to the Central African country?s improvement in domestic debt management.

Fitch upgraded its long-term foreign currency issuer default rating to B, five levels away from investment grade, from B-minus. The outlook is stable.

The firm said Cameroon?s rating is supported by the economy?s continued recovery from the global financial crisis, helped by rebound in oil production and revenues and higher public investment.

Fitch also noted that the issuance of T-bill and bonds in the domestic market since late 2010 and no recorded delays in interest payments have helped forge a track record of stronger sovereign debt service. Cameroon?s public debt is low compared to its peers, reflecting substantial debt alleviation obtained in 2006.

Fitch noted that Cameroon?s economic growth has historically been low compared to other sub-Saharan African countries due to insufficient investment in energy and transport infrastructure. However, economic growth improved to 4.2% last year as several large infrastructure projects were launched and oil prices rose. Growth is expected to reach 4.7% this year, Fitch said.

The firm also noted that Cameroon?s economy, though largely informal and heavily reliant on agriculture and commodities, is more diversified towards manufacturing than many sub-Saharan countries. The firm noted that oil production, which had been declining over the past decade, represented 7.1% of the country?s gross domestic product and 35.8% of exports last year. Fitch said output is expected to increase this year, a trend that will continue in the coming years.

Fitch said Cameroon?s ratings would benefit from a longer track record of sound sovereign debt service, as well as improved public financial management. The firm said a prolonged increase in oil output and greater investment in infrastructure would also help its ratings.

Despite less play, children's use of imagination increases over two decades

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Children today may be busier than ever, but Case Western Reserve University psychologists have found that their imagination hasn't suffered -- in fact, it appears to have increased.

Psychologists Jessica Dillon and Sandra Russ expected the opposite outcome when they analyzed 14 play studies that Russ conducted between 1985 and 2008.

But as they report in "Changes in Children's Play Over Two Decades," an article in the Creativity Research Journal, the data told a story contrary to common assumptions. First, children's use of imagination in play and their overall comfort and engagement with play activities actually increased over time. In addition, the results suggested that children today expressed less negative feelings in play. Finally, their capacity to express a wide range of positive emotions, to tell stories and to organize thoughts stayed consistent.

Dillon, a fifth-year doctoral student, and Russ, a professor in psychological sciences at Case Western Reserve, decided to revisit the play data after a 2007 report from the American Academy of Pediatrics showed children played less.

They set out to see if having less time for unstructured play affected the processes in play that influence cognition and emotional development, a focus of the play research.

The pretend play studies focused on children between the ages of 6 and 10. The children's play was measured for comfort, imagination, the range and amount of positive to negative emotions used and expressed, and the quality of storytelling by using Russ' Affect in Play Scale (APS).

The APS is a five-minute, unstructured play session. Children are asked to play freely with three wooden blocks and two human hand puppets. The play is videotaped, and later reviewed and scored for imagination, expression of emotions, actions and storytelling.

Russ explains that children who exhibit good play skills with imaginative and emotional play situations have shown better skills at coping, creativity and problem solving. She stresses there is no link between being a good player and intelligence.

The APS data provided a consistent measurement and research structure over the 23-year period. Russ said the consistency of having the same tool to measure play provided this unique opportunity to track changes in play.

"We were surprised that outside of imagination and comfort, play was consistent over time," said Dillon.

Russ did voice concern about the decrease in displayed negative emotions and actions. "Past studies have linked negative emotions in play with creativity," she said.

But even with the lack of time to play, Russ said, children, like some other forms of higher mammals, have a drive to play and always will find ways to do it.

As new stimuli, like video games and the Internet, have crept into everyday life, Russ explains that children might gain cognitive skills from using technology where they once got it from acting out situations in play. Skills might also develop from daydreaming.

Russ said future research will need to focus on whether acting out emotions and creating stories in play is as important as it once was in helping children to be creative.

Even though children have less time these days for play, Russ still advises giving children time for it, adding that it helps children develop emotional and cognitive abilities.

ROME (AP) ? Premier Mario Monti suggested Tuesday that Italian soccer be suspended for two to three years after the latest match-fixing scandal rocked the national team and again tarnished the sport's image in the country just a week before the European Championship.

Dawn raids on Monday resulted in 14 arrests ? including Lazio captain Stefano Mauri ? to bring the total number of suspects arrested in the match-fixing inquiry to about 50 since last year. Many more have been placed under investigation.

"Football should be stopped for two to three years," Monti said on Tuesday in a powerful message to Italy's soccer authorities on the need to clean up the game. "It is not a proposal by the government but a question I am asking as someone who was passionate when football was still football."

Monti made the comments while standing beside the prime minister of Poland, which is co-hosting Euro 2012 with Ukraine starting June 8.

"I'm not making a proposal, and even less is it a proposal that comes from the government, but it's a desire that sometimes I feel inside me: That it would really benefit the maturity of us Italian citizens if this game was completely suspended for two to three years," he said.

He also ruled out the use of public money to bail out teams in difficulty.

Police swept through the Italian national squad's training camp near Florence on Monday as part of the operation and Italy defender Domenico Criscito was left off the Euro 2012 squad after he was placed under investigation.

Antonio Conte, who coached Juventus to the Serie A title this term, was also officially notified that he is under investigation for alleged wrongdoing while in charge of Siena in 2010-2011.

Apart from those arrested Monday, three people have been placed under house arrest and two others are to present themselves to authorities. Five of the arrests were made in Hungary.

Numerous others have had their houses searched, including Chievo Verona striker Sergio Pellissier as well as Conte and Criscito.

The investigation was started by judicial authorities in Cremona last year. It has resulted in former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni being banned from soccer for 3 1/2 years, and the arrest of former Lazio captain Giuseppe Signori.

Serie A clubs Atalanta, Novara and Siena were among the 22 Italian teams notified at the beginning of this month that they are being investigated by sports authorities.

Prosecutors in Cremona have detailed an extensive match-fixing ring stretching as far as Singapore and South America that was allegedly in operation for more than 10 years.

Italy has only recently recovered from the 2006 match-fixing scandal ? known as Calciopoli ? that resulted in Juventus being relegated to Serie B for a season, plus points penalties for several other Serie A teams and long bans for club and refereeing officials.

The Italian national team reacted in the best possible way, winning the World Cup that year.

Tx GOP Senate Primary - Bringing The Crazy

The two men pictured above are the leading candidates in the Republican primary to run for the senate seat being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison. Both are rabid right-wingers, and they lead a field of rabid right-wingers. If you thought Hutchison was a bad senator (and she definitely was), just wait until you see these guys. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst (on the left) is currently leading ex-Solicitor General Ted Cruz (on the right).

Cruz is so far to the right that he thinks the United Nations is conspiring to ban golf courses in the United States. I wish I could say that was a joke, but he really said that while campaigning (and of course, he's pledged to foil the nefarious U.N. plot).

Dewhurst is no better, having backed plans to rape Texas women with a sonogram wand if they want an abortion, suppress voting in the state, and gerrymander Texas' new districts to make sure they go to white Republicans (even though Hispanics made up the vast majority of population growth in Texas).

The race has gotten so crazy that Cruz is now running TV ads accusing Dewhurst of being a "moderate". That may not sound bad to reasonable people, but to teabaggers like most Texas Republicans, it is the kiss of death to be labeled as a moderate. Dewhurst has fought back by getting the endorsement of Gov. Rick Perry and running ads featuring Mike Huckabee (neither of whom could be considered moderate in any way).

The fact is that there is no moderate running for the Republican nomination (and probably none left in the Texas Republican Party at all). If Texas elects and sends to Washington either of these two men (or any of the other Republicans in the contest), then the people of this state will owe an apology to the rest of the nation. And sadly, as red as Texas is, that is very likely to happen.

So far, neither of these candidates has reached the magic 50% mark in the polls, and there is probably going to be a run-off for the nomination. But a new Public Policy Polling survey shows that Dewhurst has carved out a nice lead for himself. Here are the latest numbers:

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) ? A cluster of thunderstorms stalled off the U.S. coast on Saturday is expected to make for a sloppy, rainy Memorial Day on beaches and in tourist towns from Florida to South Carolina.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire Georgia coastline, as well as parts of Florida and South Carolina.

Beryl was technically still considered a "subtropical storm," but the system is expected to bring winds and rain to the area regardless of its official classification.

Tropical storm conditions ? meaning maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph) ? could reach the coast as early as Saturday night. Some coastal flooding is forecast, as the rain could cause high tides.

The southeastern coast is popular with tourists who visit to enjoy the beaches and wilderness areas.

"A three-day thunderstorm is what it's probably going to be," said Jay Wiggins, emergency management director for Glynn County, which is about 60 miles south of Savannah and includes Brunswick and St. Simons Island. "Unfortunately, it's going to ruin a lot of Memorial Day plans."

Wiggins said he expects some flooded roadways and scattered power outages, perhaps some minor flooding in waterfront homes, but otherwise little damage. However, he urged beachgoers to beware of dangerous rip currents.

On Tybee Island, home to Georgia's largest public beach east of Savannah, employees at Amy Gaster's home and condo rental business were making sure arriving guests were aware of the approaching storm. Gaster said her 180 rentals were sold out and nobody was canceling plans or asking to check out early.

"Mostly I think people are just curious," said Gaster, adding that guests were being urged to bring in patio furniture if the winds kick up and prepare to hunker down for movies and home cooking Monday. "We're just saying take advantage of today as your beach day and get it while you can."

On Cumberland Island, a federally protected wilderness area beloved by hikers and campers, superintendent Fred Boyles said he planned to wait until Sunday to decide if campers need to evacuate before the storm arrives. Boyles said he had about 100 campers planning to stay overnight Sunday, and the only way to leave Cumberland Island is by ferry.

While Georgia hasn't taken a direct hit from a major hurricane in 114 years, the last time a tropical storm made landfall here was in August 1988. Tropical Storm Chris hit near Savannah but did little damage as it pushed northward into South Carolina.

In South Carolina, Beaufort County Emergency Management deputy director David Zeoli (zee-oli) said that at midday Saturday word went out to first-responders along the coast near the Georgia line to pay attention to the storm's progress. Officials haven't been ordered to work on an otherwise lovely day for the beach, but have been told to stay near a phone, Zeoli said.

Ind. man takes hostages, shoots self in office

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) ? Accountant Carolyn Biesen was working in her Indiana real estate office when she heard a commotion near the front desk. She walked out, saw a man standing over her injured co-worker on the ground, then yelled at him to leave.

"That's when he pulled his gun out ? and pointed it in the air," she told The Associated Press late Friday, several hours after she and several other people were taken hostage by the gunman.

Biesen, 51, retreated back into her office, locked herself in, shoved a file cabinet in front of the door and called 911. Curled up under her desk, she heard two gun shots, then several more in rapid succession.

The man, police said later, was looking for someone he believed owed him money when he went into the Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso on Friday morning. Valparaiso Police Chief Michael Brickner said officers believe the gunman shot himself twice in the head before SWAT members rushed in almost seven hours later, after the last two hostages were released unharmed.

An ambulance rushed the man to a hospital, but he died Friday evening, police said.

"He has some history here, but we believe he's from out of state," said Brickner, who declined to release the man's name.

Police received a 911 call around 10 a.m. reporting a man with a gun had entered the brokerage office. Sgt. Michael Grennes said there was a "brief exchange of gunfire" when officers arrived.

There were fewer than 10 people in the building when the incident began, and the last two hostages were released unharmed after 3 p.m., Grennes said.

No hostages reported being shot, though Grennes said one person who was struck in the head was treated and released from a hospital.

Another witness, Randy Baker, said he was in an adjacent parking lot shoveling asphalt when an officer wielding a pistol suddenly ran by and asked if he'd seen or heard anything about a gun. When Baker said he hadn't, the officer approached the Prudential building.

Seconds later, the officer began firing at least half a dozen times in rapid succession, he said.

"It was like boom, boom, boom, boom," Baker said.

After jumping behind his B&G Seal Coating truck when the firing began, Baker peeked slowly around and saw a woman through a Prudential window ? cowering under an office desk.

"That's what really scared me," Baker said. "And I ran out of there fast."

SWAT team members broke windows in the building and stormed inside less than two hours after the last hostages were released.

Mack Elliott, an agent at the brokerage, wasn't in the office at the time but said he spoke with agents who were there and believed the incident stemmed from a dispute over a real estate transaction.

Biesen, the accountant, said she didn't believe the gunman intended to hurt her.

"If he wanted to, he could have come right into the office ? maybe shooting through the door," she said. "It was scary. But I was thinking about my loved ones," she said.

Smiling and visibly relieved, Biesen spoke Friday night from her home, where several dozen family and friends gathered after word broke she had made it out unharmed.

Despite the trauma, she said she felt sorry for the gunman, noting he could have decided to surrender the office after all the hostages were released.

"It's very sad," she said.

Blue Country Magic: What's Next?

Almost as soon as I had the diploma in my hands, the thought hit me: what's next?

Others echoed that. "What are you going to do now?" asked my stepmother.

The truth?

I don't know. I have considered more school. I love college. I enjoy learning. I like the atmosphere. I like big ideas. I like being able to discuss books, theories, and facts with logical passion. I find the young people stimulating, the professors exhilarating.

Hollins offers other advanced degrees - MFAs in creative writing or children's literature, and something called a Certificate of Advanced Studies. That is 10 more classes - or over $13,000 - for a?higher degree.

The children's literature MFA is offered during the summer only. The creative writing MFA is quite competitive, but to be honest I've never really wanted the creative writing MFA. That sounds odd, perhaps, coming from someone who considers herself to be a writer, but the truth is as a Hollins undergraduate I had many writing classes, and many of my recent Hollins MA classes were writing classes. I don't know that either of these MFAs would offer me anything more.

That leaves a degree from some other university. Locally, Virginia Tech and UVA are the closest with PhD programs.?Radford University has a number of masters programs and one PhD program in psychology.

When I was a very young girl, I wanted to be many things. Those I can remember include geologist, archaeologist, investigator, newspaper reporter, psychologist, rock star, historian, lawyer, and writer of mysteries a la Nancy Drew. Somewhere along the way I realized that writing gave me the opportunity to explore any career I wanted. It also?allowed me the freedom to take part in things without actually being a part of them. The anonymity of being a newspaper reporter was something I quickly embraced. As a reporter (at least the way I have always been a reporter) I sat in the back, I observed, and I wrote the facts of what I saw. I seldom embellished - I had no need to - because the words of others generally speak for themselves. I didn't see a need to explain what was so obviously already said.

I know that other reporters thrust themselves into the stories - they became a part of it, rather than an observer. That was not - is not -?my style. But it slipped into the industry, and soon became the rule. My way became antiquated. I still think it is better.

In the last two decades the landscape has changed. Newspaper writing is not what it was - the industry has shot itself in the foot by giving away its news on the Internet and by allowing greed to run amok among the upper levels of management. Newspapers were never meant to be?for-profit businesses and those who wanted more than a decent salary and breaking even should have looked elsewhere for their dollar bills.

For me,?it has never been about the money. It's been about the story, the self-satisfaction, and what I could live with.

Which brings me back to today. I look at the current landscape and it looks like something from another galaxy. Self-publishing looms large and I suspect that is the way of the future, though it scares me. I am not big on the self-marketing aspect of that - the social networking, the push to sell.

I?have read a few self-published ebooks on my Nook, and all of them have suffered from a lack of editing. They had typos, places where they repeated themselves, trains of thought that went on and then ended nowhere, or gave too much information. Every single one of them would have been a better story if the author had taken the time to review the work with a critical eye, or had someone else do that for them. Sometimes stories need to sit for years before they see the light of day. But now it is easy to put something up, place a price on it, and hope it sells. Few people have the patience to wait for perfection.

Putting up something for sale that is less than it could be?scares me. I suppose in that regard I am anal, a perfectionist, a book snob. Just last night I was in Barnes and Noble. I picked up a book on writing that looked interesting. I turned to a random page. There was a misplaced period and a poorly written sentence. I put the book back and didn't buy it. It might have had the greatest advice ever but if the author, editor, and publisher couldn't figure out that a sentence needs a noun and verb and that periods do not belong in between clauses,?then it wasn't advice I wanted to read.

So what's next? I don't know. I don't know?where I am going. I can look back at where I have been. I have made mistakes, of course. I wouldn't be human if I hadn't. And I will make mistakes in the future. We all do.

For now, I am going to take a little time to enjoy life. It is almost June, and in a few weeks I will be adding another year to the chronicle of my life. I will be 49 years old. I am at an age when finding work, changing careers, and reinventing yourself is not as easy as it was at 20, or even 40. My hair is graying, my face is wrinkling, and parts are wearing out. I'm solidly middle-aged. And I am okay with that.

I'm even okay with not knowing what is next.

For surely, something will come.
