Boehner Takes Swipe at Obama's Courage in Addressing Huge Debt

Hoping the U.S. electorate is either not paying attention or simply doesn?t care, the Obama campaign is trying to deflect attention from the fact that the president has increased the U.S. national debt by nearly 50% in less than four years.

Obama either doesn?t want to face up to the fact that there is a debt problem, or he doesn?t believe that there is one. Either approach is a problem, but for starkly different reasons ? lack of fortitude is the problem on one hand and outright incompetence is the other. Republican House Speaker John Boehner, for one, is suggesting it?s the former as he has called the president?s courage into question on this particular issue.

As the U.S. national debt passed $16 trillion, Boehner lamented that it was "another sad reminder of President Obama?s broken promise to cut the deficit in half." What?s truly scary, of course, is that the debt figure does not include promises that the U.S. government has made to current and future recipients of Social Security benefits and Medicare/Medicaid. Add those up and the numbers get uglier still.

Boehner also noted in a written statement, "This debt is a drain on our economy and a crushing burden on our kids and grandkids, and it's yet another indication that the president's policies have made things worse." The Obama campaign has responded that Republicans were responsible for building the U.S. debt figure, but if truth is told rather than rhetoric being spewed like so much garbage that it is, the U.S. national debt has grown by $5.3 trillion under Obama?s watch. That number is, of course, ridiculous, representing a nearly 50% increase in the overall debt of the nation in just under four years. No wonder, then, that the Obama campaign does little but try to point attention of the people elsewhere when the topic arises ? what else, really, can they do?
