Hundreds of Marines to make 'motivational run' through Algiers Point ...

About 6:30 a.m., Wednesday, hundreds of Marines will line up at Marine Corps Support Facility in Algiers and, in military formations, venture out into the city streets. For about an hour, streets in Algiers Point will be closed and access to the Algiers Point ferry terminal will be restricted, as the Marines, chanting cadence verse in unison, will undertake a 3.3-mile run as part of events this week leading to the Marine Corps? 237th birthday Saturday.

Lt. Gen. Steven Hummer, commander of Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North, will lead what he called a ?motivational run.?

?Marines pride themselves on readiness and being ready for any mission thrown our way,? Hummer said Tuesday. ?Physical fitness is part of it.?

As many as 500 Marines will be involved in what will be a first for Algiers, if not New Orleans. The city has been home to a nationally significant Marine Corps Reserve headquarters command since the early 1970s.

Hummer said Marines elsewhere to the runs, including in Washington D.C, where the commandant of the Marine Corps leads Marines from the Pentagon to the Marine Corps War Memorial.

On Wednesday, Marines will leave the Marine Corps Support Facility on Hendee Street and run to Patterson Street, following it around the Point to Powder Street. From there, they?ll run to Opelousas Street and take it back to the Support Facility.

The New Orleans Police Department will escort the Marines. The run is expected to last from 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.

?This will be fun for us,? Hummer said.

The event is one of several in which the Marines are participating this week, as part of Marine Forces Reserve Heritage Week. Following Wednesday?s run, Marines will cut a Marine Corps birthday cake at the Support Facility, a Marine Corps tradition.

On Tuesday, Marines placed a wreath at the grave of Maj. Daniel Carmick, a historically significant figure in the Marine Corps who died from injuries he received during the Battle of New Orleans and is buried at St. Louis Cemetery No. 2.

About 200 Marines and Marine Corps Band New Orleans will march Saturday in the New Orleans Bicentennial Parade, following a route through the French Quarter and the Central Business District and ending in the Warehouse District.
