Motorcycle Auction Brings Unexpected Results - NYTimes.com

LAS VEGAS ? The Bonhams Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction on Thursday produced some upsets and surprises as some of the most highly anticipated lots did not sell, others sold for unexpected prices and a 1954 BMW Rennsport RS54 Sidecar was a top seller.

The BMW, believed to have been used by the factory team during its Sidecar World Championship winning season in 1954, sold for $148,000, including sales commissions.

A 1952 Vincent 998cc Black Shadow sold for $118,000 and was the only other six-figure sale listed on the auction results provided by Bonhams. It was possible, a Bonhams representative said, that some bikes that did not sell during the auction could be sold later, if buyers and sellers were able to reach subsequent agreements.

A rare white 1920 Mars 956cc Type A20, previously a part of the museum collection of Otis Chandler, the late publisher of The Los Angeles Times, sold for $75,000 ? well below the estimate of $100,000 to $125,000.

The machine that was expected to be the auction?s top seller, a 1939 BMW RS255 Kompressor, which had a presale estimate of $500,000 to $600,000, did not reach the minimum bid and was withdrawn. Another no-sale was a prized 1928 Ace Four that had a presale estimate of $200,000 to $250,000. A 1970 Husqvarna 400 dirt bike formerly owned by Steve McQueen also did not sell.

A recently discovered 1905 Leo, the only example of the marque known to exist, sold for a surprisingly modest $24,000.
